European Judo Union spotlights women powering the sport

On 8 March, the European Judo Union uses International Women’s Day to shine a light on the women who keep the sport moving. From the early-morning training sessions to late-night events, their strength, intelligence and dedication are woven into every level of European judo.

The spirit of judo grows stronger with every woman who chooses to step on the tatami.

This year’s theme, “Give To Gain”, fits perfectly with core judo values. Progress is driven by people brave enough to challenge limits and honest enough to recognise both setbacks and milestones. In judo, giving time, experience and encouragement doesn’t weaken you; it builds trust, confidence and a tighter community.

Long-lasting friendships start in the dojo and continue far beyond the tatami. Knowledge is shared between generations, and mentorship helps young athletes and future coaches find their way. When one woman in European judo rises, she opens doors for many others, proving that individual success can lift an entire community.

Today, the EJU pays tribute to athletes, coaches, referees, officials and mentors whose daily work keeps the sport alive. Their commitment shows that judo is not just about scoring ippon, but about living respect, courage and responsibility in real life.

International Women’s Day is also a reminder to pause and say thank you. Champions, mothers, leaders and friends have all played their part in bringing the sport to where it is now. At the same time, the day calls for a renewed push towards more equity and inclusion, recognising that every new opportunity for one woman makes European judo and the wider judo world stronger.

With this message, the European Judo Union sends its best wishes to all women who help shape the past, present and future of judo.
