Olek Faces a Deep -78 kg Test in Baku
Share
Anna Monta Olek enters the World Championships in Baku as the world number one in the -78 kg division, with a wide-open battle ahead in one of Judo’s most competitive categories. Germany’s leading contender was a finalist at last year’s worlds, losing to Alice Bellandi, and now has the chance to chase the title herself.
Bellandi, the Olympic and reigning world champion from Italy, is the notable absence from a field otherwise packed with major contenders. Olek’s route to the quarter-final appears relatively clear on paper, but the pressure will rise sharply once the decisive rounds begin.
Pool B brings together Japan’s Kurena Ikeda and France’s Kaila Issoufi, two athletes positioned as leading names in their section. Pool C is led by Yelyzaveta Lytvynenko of the United Arab Emirates, who is still seeking a first world championship medal for her country. A breakthrough in Baku would be a major moment for Lytvynenko and UAE Judo.
The experienced Audrey Tcheumeo remains another serious force in the draw. The French judoka won an Olympic medal in London in 2012 and is still ranked in the world top 10 fourteen years later. Before a possible contest with Lytvynenko, however, Tcheumeo could face Great Britain’s Emma Reid in a demanding section that also includes Germany’s Alina Boehm.
The -78 kg draw brings experience, ambition and little room for error.
The lower half offers further European medal contenders. Slovenia’s Metka Lobnik and Portugal’s Patricia Sampaio, an Olympic and world medallist, both have strong reasons to believe they can reach the podium. With so many established athletes spread across the draw, the route to -78 kg gold in Baku is set to be one of the toughest challenges of the championships.
