Omanadze’s Five-Second Podium Rescue Steals the Spotlight

Luka Omanadze produced one of the defining moments of the -60 kg Junior European Championships in Podgorica, scoring with just five seconds left to claim a bronze medal. Competing at his first continental championships at any age level, the Georgian turned a near-defeat against Ben Tamary into a breakthrough podium finish.
The -60 kg category had been wide open from the start. Leading seeds fell early, reshaping the draw and leaving unexpected contenders in position to fight for medals. By the final, Aykhan Mirzazada of Azerbaijan and an opponent few would have predicted at the beginning of the day were left to contest the Junior European title, with Mirzazada taking gold.
Tamary arrived in Podgorica with strong recent form. The Israeli had earned bronze at the La Nucia/Benidorm European Open during the summer and later won the Berlin Junior European Cup, one of the junior circuit’s leading events.
His progress in Montenegro was halted in the quarter-final by Hryhory Zurnachan of Belarus, sending Tamary into the repechage. There, he earned another chance at a medal and faced Omanadze in the bronze-medal contest.
For Omanadze, reaching this stage was already unfamiliar territory. Podgorica was his first appearance at any continental championships, with no previous Cadet European experience or earlier exposure to this level of competition. Still, he advanced all the way to the semi-final before Mirzazada stopped his run.
The bronze contest appeared to be slipping away as the final seconds passed. Tamary was ahead and close to sealing the medal, but Omanadze refused to let the opportunity disappear. With five seconds remaining in regulation time, he found the score he needed and reversed the contest at the last possible moment.
Five seconds were enough to transform Omanadze’s first continental event into a podium finish.
It was a dramatic end to a turbulent -60 kg day, and a major first statement from Omanadze on the Junior European stage.
