Three Generations Test European Ne-Waza in Riga

Riga hosted a significant step for competitive European ne-waza, bringing cadets, juniors and seniors into the same championship structure. With 18 nations represented and medals shared across a wide range of countries, the event offered a positive early measure of interest in the format.

For EJU Education Director Ronnie Saez, the chance to see three generations of athletes competing at one championship was among the weekend’s standout features. The competition differed from the previous Veteran Ne-Waza Championships, with younger categories bringing speed, agility and a different rhythm to the tatami.

Golden score became one of the major talking points among coaches. It also gave referees a first opportunity to work within this championship setting, and Saez said they adapted well to the experience.

Ahead of the competition, EJU President's Advisory Board member Slaviša Bradić and EJU Head Referee Commissioner Franc Ocko led a session for officials. Their preparation included demonstrations and a question-and-answer session designed to clarify the rules and their application.

Riga gave athletes, coaches and referees a first chance to shape this developing format.

The event was not presented as a finished product. Feedback is now being gathered from athletes, coaches, referees and others involved, with the commission set to review those observations and consider adjustments for the future.

The broad medal distribution and participation from 18 countries were further encouraging signs for the discipline at European level. Saez described the overall response from participants as positive, with many welcoming the direction of the championship.

Riga’s role was to test the concept under competition conditions rather than deliver every answer immediately. The next stage will be to assess what worked, identify areas for refinement and take those lessons forward when the championship moves to Estonia in 2027.
